Etymology

From English Alkaid (a star of Ursa Major) +‎ -ia. Further from Arabic القَائِد (al-qāʔid, literally the leader), from the root ق و د (q w d, relating to managing or steering). This may have been a reference to the cultural connection often drawn between the Asteroidea and astronomical objects.
