Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀελλόπος (aellópos, very quick; lightning fast), from Ancient Greek ἀελλᾰ́ς (aellắs, storm) +‎ Ancient Greek πούς (poús, foot).

Coined by German entomologist Jacob Hübner in 1819.
