Borrowed from Ancient Greek αἰγοθήλης (aigothḗlēs, nightjar, literally goat-milker), from αἴξ (aíx, goat) +‎ θηλή (thēlḗ, nipple, teat) +‎ -ης (-ēs, agent-noun suffix). Compare Caprimulgus, from Latin caprimulgus (goat-milker, nightjar), itself a calque of αἰγοθήλης (aigothḗlēs); and Greek αιγοθήλας (aigothílas, nightjar).
