Borrowed from Ancient Greek αἰγοθήλης (aigothḗlēs, “nightjar”, literally “goat-milker”), from αἴξ (aíx, “goat”) +‎ θηλή (thēlḗ, “nipple, teat”) +‎ -ης (-ēs, agent-noun suffix). Compare Caprimulgus, from Latin caprimulgus (“goat-milker, nightjar”), itself a calque of αἰγοθήλης (aigothḗlēs); and Greek αιγοθήλας (aigothílas, “nightjar”).
