Ultimately from Latin Acis, from Ancient Greek Ἄκις (Ákis). Attested as Arabic اليَاج (al-yāj), لْيَاج (lyāj), [script needed] (līāj), Byzantine Greek Γιακίου (Giakíou) (gen.), Sicilian Jaci. Despite the river not existing anymore, its name is still present in many toponyms of the area. The standard form was ultimately reinforced by the river's ancient name in its lack of /j/.
