Etymology
From ๐ท๐- (valence reducer prefix) +โ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฬ๐ก๐ฃฬอ๐ค๐; the latter from Proto-Dhegiha *sta(r)ฤฏke, itself likely from a Proto-Mississipi-Valley compound *sta +โ *ฤฏฬke (with neither part of the compound identified). The *-r- here appears to be epenthetic.[1]
The term might have originated in one southern Siouan language and then diffused to others, or was borrowed from an unidentified substrate language, due to the scattered distribution of the cognates and many phonological irregularities between them.
Compare Kansa stรกโฟyiโฟge, stรณโฟiโฟge, Quapaw stanฤ ฬke (โpersimmon fruitโ), stanฤ ฬhi (โpersimmon treeโ) and Biloxi stiฤฏki.
