Etymology

From Proto-Dhegiha *róxe. The lack of non-Dhegiha cognates and uniform reflexes (some cognates derive from *Róxe instead) may suggest a substrate borrowing.[1]

Cognate with Omaha-Ponca nóxe, Kansa yóxe (buffalo bull with reddish hair) and Quapaw toxe (reddish-yellow buffalo).
