Etymology
From Proto-Dhegiha *-ahรฉ, from Proto-Mississippi-Valley *(a)hรฉ, from Proto-Siouan *hรฉยท. The initial syllable was remodelled after ๐ญ๐ฬ (โhead, tip, noseโ, from Proto-Dhegiha *hpรก); a phenomenon that can also be found in the other Dhegiha languages.[1] Compare also ๐ฌ๐ฬ๐ก๐ฬอ (โto raise, rise upโ).[2]
Cognate with Lakota and Dakota pahรก, Assiniboine bahรก, Chiwere ahรฉ, รณhe (โhill, moundโ), Omaha-Ponca ppahรฉ, Kansa bahรฉลกta and Biloxi รชkthaani (โhill, peakโ).
