Etymology

Unknown, but some notice a similarity with the Neo-Assyrian version of the cuneiform sign 𒆷 (la). Considering that no other letter in the Old Persian alphabet seems to be based on Akkadian cuneiform signs, this similarity is most likely coincidental.
