Etymology 1
From Proto-Germanic *kweรพanฤ , ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gสทet-. In the Gothic Bible it is used to translate Ancient Greek ฮปฮญฮณฯ (lรฉgล, โto sayโ). Compare Old Norse kveรฐa, Old High German quedan, and Old English cweรพan (modern English quethe).
