Etymology
Uncertain. Probably related to Marrucinian eituam. De Vaan suggests a possible derivation from Proto-Italic *eituΔ. However, any further etymology remains unclear. De Vaan suggests that the term derives from the root *hβey- (βto goβ), perhaps with a semantic development of "that which goes" to "livestock" to "money." Similarly, Latin pecΕ«nia (βmoneyβ) may also derive from Proto-Italic *peku (βcattleβ).
