Etymology

    Sino-Korean word from 花鬪, from 花 (“flower”) + 鬪 (“fight”).

    Latter half possibly taken from 투전 (鬪牋, tujeon, literally “fighting tablets”), traditional Korean playing cards that were replaced by hanafuda/hwatu during the Japanese occupation (1910-1945).
