Etymology
First attested as Late Old Korean 漢賽 in the Jīlín lèishì (鷄林類事 / 계림유사)[1], 1103 In the hangul script, first attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 한새 (Yale: hansay), 하- (ha-, “big; great”) + -ㄴ (-n) + 새 (say, “bird”) Restoration from the contaminated form 황새 (hwangsae) to the pure Middle Korean form.
