    Noun

    포도 • (podo) (hanja 葡萄)

    1. grape (fruit)
    2. grapevine (Vitis vinifera)
      Synonym: 포도(葡萄)나무 (podonamu)

    Usage notes

    • The variant 보도 (bodo) is found in older texts (e.g. (16–17th century) medical texts such as the Dongui Bogam).
    • The alternation between initial ㅂ (b-) and ㅍ (p-) is a regular feature in Korean historical phonology, and explains the transition from 보도 (bodo) to 포도 (podo).
