Etymology

    Sino-Korean word from 春川, from 春 (“springtime”) + 川 (“stream”). Renamed in 1413 from earlier 춘주 (春州, Chunju), as part of an administrative policy to reserve the character 州 (ju, “province”) for the largest towns only. The name 춘주 (春州, Chunju) was itself coined in an administrative rearrangement in 940, and appears to be of unclear provenance.
