아산

Korean

Etymology

Sino-Korean word from 牙山, renamed in 1413 from earlier 아주 (牙州, Aju) as part of an administrative reform to reserve the character (ju) for larger towns only. 아주 (牙州, Aju) was itself a sinicization of 牙述 (MC ngae zywit), the ancient Baekje name for the place.
