First attested as Late Old Korean 鶻試 in the Jīlín lèishì (鷄林類事 / 계림유사)[1], 1103. 鶻試 is the incorrect ordering of 試鶻, as this ordering produces the correct sound.

From Middle Korean 수컷 (sukhes), from 숳 (suh, “male”) + 것 (kes, “thing”).
