Inherited from Old Japanese.[1] The noun sense is a nominalization of the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of classical adjective 近(ちか)し (chikashi, “near”), equivalent to modern 近(ちか)い (chikai).
