From Old Japanese 負く (maku), in the (しも)()(だん)(かつ)(よう) (shimo nidan katsuyō, lower bigrade conjugation) pattern, from Proto-Japonic *mak-a-.

First attested in the Nihon Shoki of 720 CE.[1]
