腹違い

Compound of 腹(はら) (hara, “belly”) + 違(ちが)い (chigai), the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 違(ちが)う (chigau, “to differ”).

     それから子(こ)供(ども)のことだって、十(じゅう)二(に)人(にん)もある子(こ)供(ども)で、腹(はら)違(ちが)いが多(おお)いから、お前(まえ)の子(こ)として育(そだ)って来(き)たものを、また他(ほか)の者(も)の手(のて)へ渡(わた)しては子(こ)供(ども)が可哀(かわい)そうだからと、すっかりあたしの子(こ)になさったのを、誰(だれ)に教(きょう)育(いく)をたのもうというのでしょう。

     Sore kara kodomo no koto datte, jūninin mo aru kodomo de, harachigai ga ōi kara, omae no ko to shite sodatte kita mono o, mata hoka no mono no te e watashite wa kodomo ga kawaisō dakara to, sukkari atashi no ko ni nasatta no o, dare ni kyōiku o tanomō to iu no deshō.

     Then there is the matter of children, twelve of them, mainly half siblings you took in because you said it would be cruel to leave them to others. But now that they are my responsibility, who shall I get to educate them?

     今(いま)の母(はは)が生(う)みました腹(はら)違(ちが)いの妹(いもうと)が二人(ふたり)ありま、二人(ふたり)とも普通(ふつう)の背恰好(せかっこう)の女(おんな)ですのに、どうして私(わたし)ばかりがコンナ身(しん)体(たい)に生(　う)まれ付(つ)きましたのか不(ふ)思(し)議(ぎ)でなりません。

     Ima no haha ga umimashita harachigai no imōto ga futari arima, futari to mo futsū no sekakkō no onna desu no ni, dōshite watashi bakari ga konna shintai ni umaretsukimashita no ka fushigi de narimasen.

     My mother now has two half-sisters with a different mother, both of whom are of average build, so I can't help but wonder how I came to be born into this curious body.

     品(ひな)子(こ)は妹(いもうと)といっても、腹(はら)違(ちが)いであり、小(こ)菊(ぎく)はお篠(しの)にとって義(ぎ)理(り)の娘(むすめ)であった。

     Hinako wa imōto to itte mo, harachigai deari, Kogiku wa Oshino ni totte giri no musume deatta.

     Hinako was said to be her younger sister, though they were half sisters, Kogiku being Oshino's stepdaughter.
