First attested in the late-16th century.

The 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of classical verb 仕似す (shinisu, modern 仕似せる (shiniseru), “to succeed the occupation of one's parents, run a business long trusted by consumers”).

The kanji spelling is from rōho below.
