Kanji in this term
しゃく
Hyōgai
kan'yōon

Coined in Japan as a 国字 (kokuji, national (i.e. coined-in-Japan) character),[1][2][3] from elements (illness, radical) + (accumulation). The original sense was menstrual cramps, and the character was coined from the way that this physical pain happens a lot over time.[1]

The reading comes from the goon reading shaku of constituent part .[1]

First cited in 1593.[1]
