May be a coinage in Japanese of Middle Chinese-derived roots, as a compound of 班 (han, “divide, distribute”) + 田 (den, “paddy, rice field”).[1][2][3]
First attested in the 令集解 (Ryō no Shūge, “Code Commentary”), a commentary on the 養老律令 (Yōrō Ritsuryō, “Yōrō Code”) and dating from no later than 868.[1]
