Etymology

Compound of 焦げる (kogeru, to become burnt, scorched, singed, charred) +‎ 付く (tsuku, to stick to something).[1]

  1. to become burnt and stick to something (e.g. a frying pan)
  2. for money to become uncollectable
  3. for a market price to become stuck, unchanged

Usage notes

With regard to monetary matters, 焦げ付く is said of the lender. Compare the English expression to get burned (in a transaction). Meanwhile, 踏み倒す is said of the borrower.
