Etymology

Compound of 掛(か)け (kake, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 掛(か)ける (kakeru, “to cover; to lay on top of”)) + 布(ふ)団(とん) (futon, “futon”). The futon changes to buton as an instance of rendaku (連(れん)濁(だく)).
