Grade: S
kun'yomi
Alternative spelling
煽ぐ

Etymology

/apuɡu//afuɡu//auɡu//aoɡu/

Inherited from Old Japanese.[1] The shift from apu to ao is irregular; compare the development of 煽る (apuru → aoru, to be blown by the wind; to fan, flap, intransitive). Compare also (おうぎ) (ōgi, fan), derived from the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of this verb, but which shows the expected shift from apu to ō.
