Etymology
Appears starting from the Muromachi period (室町時代 (Muromachi jidai), c. 1336–1573). Derived as the -na adjective construction of -i adjective 小さい (chīsai, “small, little”), which see for more.

Usage notes
- Only used to modify a noun attributively. In all other uses, only 小さい (chīsai) may be used; for example,
- *小さだ。 ― Chīsa da. ― It is small. (predicative use)
- *小さに見える。 ― Chīsa ni mieru. ― It looks small. (adverbial use)
- are incorrect, and must be
- 小さい。 ― Chīsai. ― It is small.
- 小さく見える。 ― Chīsaku mieru. ― It looks small.
