Pronunciation

Note: Dàngchāng — deprecated in Mainland China for the county name.

Proper noun

宕昌

  1. () Tanchang (a county of Longnan, Gansu, China)
  2. () Dangchang (an ancient kingdom)

Usage notes

In PRC, the pronunciation Tànchāng was officially adopted in 2014 at the request of the locals, who insisted against the pronunciation Dàngchāng. This change is reflected in recently published dictionaries in PRC, where Tànchāng is assigned to the modern county name (but not the ancient kingdom name, at least explicitly).
