Etymology

From the reinterpretation of the first syllable of 媳婦媳妇 (xífù, “son's wife”) as "son's wife". Note 媳婦媳妇 (xífù) was originally also written as 息婦息妇 (son's wife), composed of (, “son”) + (, “wife”) (Shi, 2008).
