Qing-era Mandarin transcription Manchu ᡨᠠᡳᠵᡳ (taiji), in turn from Classical Mongolian ᠲᠠᠢᠵᠢ (taiǰi), itself from Early Mandarin 太子 (/*tʰäj.t͜sɿ/, “crown prince held by emperor’s son”) and 太弟 (/*tʰäj.ti/, “crown prince held by emperor’s younger brother”).
