Etymology

Borrowed from a food name from KFC's menu.

First figuratively extended to software in the context of Internet software and mobile applications, referencing unwanted and unsolicited bundleware (often with a similar icon or interface) that gets installed when a user installs one application, akin to receiving an entire "family" of applications even if only one was desired.

Later, this computing sense was further extended to refer to legitimate, comprehensive software collections or suites from a single vendor.
