     ところが自(じ)由(ゆう)寮(りょう)には自(じ)治(ち)委(い)員(いん)会(かい)という機(き)関(かん)があって、委(い)員(いん)には上(じょう)級(きゅう)生(せい)がなっていたが、しかしこの委(い)員(いん)は寮(りょう)生(せい)間(あいだ)の互(ご)選(せん)ではなく、学(がっ)校(こう)当(とう)局(きょく)から指(ゆび)命(いのち)されており、噂(うわさ)によれば寮(りょう)生(せい)の思(し)想(そう)傾(けい)向(こう)や行(こう)動(どう)を監(かん)視(し)して、いかがわしい寮(りょう)生(せい)を見(み)つけると、学(がっ)校(こう)当(とう)局(きょく)へ報(ほう)告(こく)するいわばスパイの役(やく)をしているということであった。

     The Free Dormitory had a so-called Self-government Committee whose membership was made up of upperclassmen, but the members were not elected by the residents; rather, they were appointed by the school administration, and it was said that they monitored the students’ ideology and behavior, acting as spies for the authorities.
