Etymology

By surface analysis, 一天 (itten, the whole world) +‎ 万乗 (banjō, sovereign, literally ten thousand chariots). Starting in the Zhou dynasty, the emperor was allocated ten thousand chariots, hence 万乗 became a metonym for the emperor or his sovereignty.
