Etymology
By surface analysis, 一天 (itten, “the whole world”) + 万乗 (banjō, “sovereign”, literally “ten thousand chariots”). Starting in the Zhou dynasty, the emperor was allocated ten thousand chariots, hence 万乗 became a metonym for the emperor or his sovereignty.
