      Borrowed from Okinawan 波布 (habu, “pit viper”), where this kind of snake is native. Appears to be cognate with Japanese 蛇 (hebi, “snake”, depending on dialect, hebi may refer specifically to non-venomous snakes), and related to verb 食む (hamu, “to bite”).[4]

      First cited in Japanese to a text from 1795.[5]
