ギャグセン

Japanese

Alternative spelling
ギャグ線

Etymology

Apparently from ギャグ (gyagu, joke) + センス (sensu, good sense (for something)), with the latter element clipped. The elements are ultimately from English gag, sense. In the alternative spelling ギャグ線 the kanji is ateji (()()). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “random websites usually say it's from ギャグのセンス; if true, then 〜線 is ateji?”)

Some caveats, however, are necessary. Although the notion that "high gyagusen = amusing speaker" is strong, there is a risk in reducing the definition to "humorousness". For instance, qualities such as "keenly observant" or disposition to "find the humor in situations", as well as nonverbal qualities such as "easy-going presence" or "skilled mood-maker" are not usually evaluated as gyagusen.]
