Past or perfective of 飛(と)ぶ (tobu, “to deviate from common sense”). Unrelated to とんでもない (tondemonai, “outrageous”).

      Sōshite Oku-san ni tonda koto ga dekita to kogoe de tsugemashita.
      And in a small voice I told Oku-san that something terrible had happened.
