Etymology

From 御(お) (o-, honorific prefix) + 伽(とぎ) (togi, “relieving one of boredom with a story; taking care of one”) + 話(はなし) (hanashi, “story, tale”). The hanashi changes to banashi as an instance of rendaku (連(れん)濁(だく)).
