A shift from earlier うつらふ (utsurafu), itself the 未然形(みぜんけい) (mizenkei, “irrealis form”) of 移(うつ)る (utsuru, “to move”) + auxiliary verb ふ (-fu, a suffix indicating repetition or ongoing state).^[1]
