Etymology

From Proto-Berber *ta-məṭṭuṭ-t,[1] the active participle of *ṭ-ḍ (to suckle) (whence ⵟⵟⴹ (ṭṭḍ, to suckle)).

Cognate with Tashelhit tamṭṭut (woman,wife), Kabyle, Tarifit, and Senhaja de Srair tameṭṭut (woman,wife), Tuareg tamăḍt, tăməṭ (woman, wife), and within Pan-Berber compare Guanche chamato (woman).
