Etymology
From Proto-Berber *ta-məṭṭuṭ-t,[1] the active participle of *ṭ-ḍ (“to suckle”) (whence ⵟⵟⴹ (ṭṭḍ, “to suckle”)).
Cognate with Tashelhit tamṭṭut (“woman,wife”), Kabyle, Tarifit, and Senhaja de Srair tameṭṭut (“woman,wife”), Tuareg tamăḍt, tăməṭ (“woman, wife”), and within Pan-Berber compare Guanche chamato (“woman”).
