Etymology

From Proto-Berber *arəw, from earlier *ăHrəw ("to give birth"). Compare with Akkadian erû (to be(come) pregnant), Egyptian jwr (to conceive), Beja oor (child), Somali uur (stomach). Unrelated to Proto-Semitic *walad-.
