From Proto-Berber *arəw, from earlier *ăHrəw ("to give birth"). Compare with Akkadian erû (“to be(come) pregnant”), Egyptian jwr (“to conceive”), Beja oor (“child”), Somali uur (“stomach”). Unrelated to Proto-Semitic *walad-.
