Etymology

By surface analysis, ῥέω (rhéō, “to flow, stream, gush”) +‎ -σῐς (-sĭs). Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *srútis, from *srew- (“to flow, stream”) +‎ *-tis.^[1] However, Beekes considers the age of the formation to be uncertain on account of the productivity of the suffix.^[2]

Cognate with Sanskrit स्रुति (srúti-, “stream, (out)flow, discharge; course, path; drain”) and Lithuanian srū́ti (“to flow, run (of water); to cover oneself with water”).
