From Proto-Hellenic *oneidos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃neyd-os (blame, revilement); compare Gothic 𐌽𐌴𐌹𐌸 (neiþ), Sanskrit निन्दा (nindā́), Latvian naids.[1]
