ὄλλυμι
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ὀλλύω (ollúō)
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₃elh₁- (“destroy”). By surface analysis, ὀλοός (oloós, “destructive”) + -νῡμῐ (-nūmĭ), with assimilation of *-λν- (*-ln-) to -λλ- (-ll-) as *όλ-νῠμι (*ól-nŭmi), though these were likely parallel derivations from some Proto-Hellenic etymon. Compare Latin ab-oleō, which may be related.
Pronunciation
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /ól.lyː.mi/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈol.ly.mi/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈol.ly.mi/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /ˈol.ly.mi/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /ˈo.li.mi/
