Etymology

Believed to be from Phoenician 𐤀𐤃𐤍 (ʾdn /⁠adōn⁠/, lord), from Proto-Semitic *ʾadan- (to rule, judge), and so perhaps cognate to Hebrew אדון (adón, lord) and therefore Hebrew אדוני (adonái, my lords; the Lord, a name of God in Judaism).
