Etymology

    From Ἀκάδημος (Akádēmos) (also Ἑκάδημος (Hekádēmos)), an Athenian hero and original estate-holder of the site + -ία (-ía). His name has in turn been interpreted as meaning "of a silent district;" see ἀκή (akḗ, “silence”) + δῆμος (dêmos, “district”), but Beekes connects the first compound element to Proto-Indo-European *weḱ- (“to choose, want”) (see ἑκών (hekṓn, “willing”)) and does not find any identification of the second compound element convincing.
