Etymology

The connection with ᾰ̓́ρκῠς (ắrkŭs, “hunter's net”) is doubtful. The suffix is also seen in δρεπᾰ́νη (drepắnē, “sickle”), κᾰπᾱ́νη (kăpā́nē, “chariot”) and θηγᾰ́νη (thēgắnē, “whetstone”). Probably a loanword, perhaps from Pre-Greek, according to Beekes.
