Inherited from Proto-Berber. Alternatively, a back-formation from aṣemmiḍ, as the usual form of this verb does not contain a geminate m. Compare Tarifit ṣmeḍ, Tashelhit iṣmiḍ, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵉⵚⵎⵉⵟ (iṣmiṭ).
