From Proto-Tai *hwanᴬ (“dream”). Cognate with Thai ฝัน (fǎn), Isan ฝัน, Lao ຝັນ (fan), Northern Thai ᨺᩢ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨺᩢ᩠ᨶ, Lü ᦚᧃ (ḟan), Tai Dam ꪠꪽ, Tai Nüa ᥜᥢᥴ (fán), Ahom 𑜇𑜃𑜫 (phan) or 𑜇𑜞𑜃𑜫 (phran), Khamti ၸ︀ꩫ︀်. Compare Sui vyanl (“dream”), Southern Kam bienl, biaenl (“dream”).
