From Proto-Mon-Khmer *koŋ (“to bend; to be bent”) (whence Khmer កោង (kaong, “to bend; to be bent”)). Cognate with Thai ก่ง (gòng), ก้งโค้ง, โก่ง (gòong), โก้งโค้ง, โค้ง (kóong).
