From Old Khmer *ខ្វេង៑ (*khveṅ, “to go far around; to encircle; to enclose”). Cognate with Lao ແຂວງ (khuǣng), Modern Khmer ខ្វែង (khvaeng). See also กำแพง (gam-pɛɛng, “wall”).
