From Old Khmer *ខ្វេង៑ (*khveṅ, to go far around; to encircle; to enclose). Cognate with Lao ແຂວງ (khuǣng), Modern Khmer ខ្វែង (khvaeng). See also กำแพง (gam-pɛɛng, wall).
