Borrowed from Sanskrit श्रेष्ठी (śreṣṭhī, “merchant”). Compare Old Khmer sesṭhi (“wealthy merchant”); Modern Khmer សេដ្ឋី (seetthəy, “wealthy man”); Lao ເສດຖີ (sēt thī); Pali seṭṭhī (“wealthy man”).
